Kiwanis Honors Tyler Smallwood

Citizenship Award Recipient

The Kiwanis Scholastic and Citizenship Award is presented each term to a student who has faced challenges and has been able to overcome them. To be considered for the award, a student must demonstrate significant scholastic improvement during the grading period. The candidate must also attend classes regularly, show respect for other students and teachers, participate in class and be willing to help others.

Most recently, the award was presented to Tyler Smallwood. Tyler is a senior at Talawanda who has made an impressive turnaround, especially in the area of academics. During his early years at Talawanda Tyler struggled academically in his classes. As the material became more challenging he realized that work had to be completed outside of class but he wasn't getting it done. This school year Tyler enrolled in Talawanda’s Career Based Intervention Program which is designed to help students improve academic competence, graduate from high school, develop employability skills, set goals, and implement a career plan that will carry them through high school graduation and preparation for post-secondary education. As a result Tyler has demonstrated steady improvement in his effort and dedication to his school responsibilities. He has improved ALL of his grades and is well on his way toward high school graduation! Tyler has already enlisted in the Navy as a way to give back to our community and country.
